Sommerfield Marie Wallerstein OHC.JPG

Marie Wallerstein Sommerfield was born and raised in Paducah, Kentucky. Before she married Alan William Sommerfield, she was married to a man named Fitzgerald, who was not Jewish. They lived in California and had two children, John and Claudia, until one day he disappeared and left her with the two children. She returned to Georgia to stay with her aunt, Josephine Shulhafer, and get back on her feet. She met Alan Sommerfield, who asked her to marry him on the dance floor at the Standard Club, when he was 58 years old. They had one son. Marie discusses her numerous relatives (Wachtels and Sommerfields) including Clara (Sissy) and Julius Sommerfield, her in-laws as well as most of the prominent members of the Jewish community in Atlanta. She discusses the social life and customs in the south and recalls the Jewish women she knew who Alred Uhry folded into his depiction of Miss Daisy in Driving Miss Daisy.
