Asher Norman OHC.JPG

Norman Asher was born in Atlanta, Georgia. He and his brother, Thomas Asher, are related to some of the major and influential families in Atlanta including the Elsases (Fulton Bay and Cotton Mills) and Riches and Strausses (Rich's Department Store). Norman's father, Joseph worked for Rich's and Norman followed him into that career. Norman's first wife was Barbara Miller Asher, who was active in community affairs, including sitting on the Atlanta City Council. Barbara died in 1995 and two years later Norman married Mildred Hyman. Norman recalls his childhood and friends (including Alfred Uhry), the history of Fulton Bay and Cotton Mills and his family's involvement with Rich's. He also recalls the history of the Jewish community in Atlanta and various historical events in Atlanta's past (Leo M. Frank murder trial, segregation and integration, and the establishment of the Temple in which the Elsases were key players). He discusses Barbara's involvement with civic affairs and his own volunteer and philahthropic activities.
