Abraham (Al) Alhadeff was born in Atlanta. His parents, Solomon and Estreya, were born in Turkey and Rhodes respectively. The family was in the shoe repair business. Al had three brothers (Jake, Morris, and Charlie and a sister, Alice. When the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor all four boys enlisted in the army and the navy and saw action in the Pacific. Al rose through the ranks and became the Chief Petty Officer on the USS Colonial. When he returned from the war he got a law degree and an accounting degree on the GI Bill. Al discusses the war years, his service in the Navy the mood in the country after Pearl Harbor, his wife, Ruth, and family and the Sephardic experience in Atlanta (his father helped found Or Ve Shalom).
