Donald and Meta Backer live in Athens, Georgia. Donald's family originally came from Poland but he was born and grew up in New York City (the Bronx). He became and engineer and worked in Puerto Rico and other places around the world before coming to Athens, Georgia to work for Wellington Leisure Products. Meta Back is a Holocaust survivor who grew up In Amsterdam, Holland. Her father, Samuel, was a Sephardic Jew. Her mother was not Jewish but she became a halachic Jew when she married Samuel. Meta's immediate family survived the war (although her mother died of cancer soon afterward). Her grandfather was murdered in Sobibor. He father Samuel Sarfatie was a prominent and well-known doctor in Amsterdam. After the war Meta moved to Switzerland where she met Donald. Eventually they returned to the United States and settled in Athens. They have two children: Yona and Naomi. Donald and Meta discuss their families, childhood, the Holocaust, intermarriage, Donald's time in the United States army, his career, Congregation Children of Israel (Athens, Georgia).
