Shirley Berkowitz Brickman was born in Atlanta. Her parents, Irving and Rose Berkowitz, owned a grocery store. Shirley grew up above the store and worked in it. She attended public schools although she did receive a religious education in Sunday School. The family belonged to Ahavath Achim congregation. She met and married her husband, Stanley Perry Brickman, an oral surgeon in Atlanta at a dance at the Georgia Terrace Hotel. They have three children: Jeffrey, Lori and Teresa. Shirley discusses her ancestors, parents and family life, religious education, the Ahavath Achim and Beth Jacob synagogues, her parent's grocery store, work ethic and relationship with African-Americans, her public school education and teachers, music lessons, Jewish day camps, life during World War II, the death of Franklin Delano Roosevelt, the Holocaust, the Jewish social scene in Atlanta when she was growing up, Jewish clubs (adult and youth), Jewish observance and cooking, antisemitism and crime in Atlanta, meeting, dating and marrying Perry, their travels around the United States, her husband's dental practice and career, and their children. She discusses her volunteer activities with the William Breman Jewish Heritage Museum where she is a docent and various Jewish organizations over the years.
