Leonard Diamond was born in Atlanta, Georgia. His father, Eugene, owned a grocery store. He had three brothers: Norman, Arthur and Paul. He attended public schools finally entering Emory University at age 17 shortly after which he was drafted into the United States Navy near the end of the World War II. After his military service he returned to Emory University, from which he graduated. He met and married Shirley Goodman and they had four children. He joined Harry Goodman's (his father in law's) commercial painting and wall covering business, eventually becoming the CEO. He discusses his childhood and family, sports at the Jewish Educational Alliance, the Hebrew Oprhans' Home, Jewish social clubs (A.Z.A.), antisemitism, the assassination of Yitzhak Rabin, Jewish education in Atlanta, the growth of Atlanta and changing Jewish neighborhoods and institutions including his involvement with the Marcus Jewish Community Center, the Jewish Educational Alliance, and the Jewish Federation of Greater Atlanta. He also discusses Goodman Decorating and Painting and its growth over the years.
