Leon Samuel Eplan was born in Jacksonville, Florida in 1928. His father, Samuel Leon, was a well-known lawyer. Leon discusses his family and their role in the Jewish and general community. His grandfather was one of the founders of Ahavath Achim Congregation and the Jewish Educational Alliance and was active in all areas of the Jewish community, as was his father. Leon followed in their footsteps. Leon recalls in detail his childhood, friends, family, public and Jewish education, the Boy Scouts, Jewish life and social activities and clubs, sports, his Bar Mitzvah (which coincided exactly with Pearl Harbor), fraternities at various universities, antisemitism and quotas in universities, synagogues, relations between Blacks and Jews, Jewish-Jewish relations, various rabbis, Zionism, his travels abroad, the civil rights movement, local and state political leaders, his family's various businesses (Abelsons and Eplans), Jewish philanthropy, Jewish clubs, youth organizations, social activities and the effect of the Leo M. Frank murder trial on the community. Leon recalls the landmarks and old neighborhoods of Atlanta and details the explosive growth of the city and his career as a city planner, including his role in the Atlanta Olympics.
