Friedman Esther Barnett OHC.JPG

Esther Barnett Friedman was born in Atlanta, Georgia to Sarah and Joe Friedman, who had emigrated from different parts of Russia. Her family was in the dry-goods, grocery trade, and clothing industry. Her husband, Jake Friedman, was in the music industry (first in juke box distribution and then in the record industry.) She attended Atlanta Normal Training School and became a teacher. She taught for several years until she met her husband, Jake Friedman, who had attended the Georgia Institute of Technology. Esther discusses her childhood, the various synagogues and relationships between German, Russian and Sephardic Jews, the Jewish neighborhoods in Atlanta, antisemitism, her education and teaching career, marriage and family. Esther discusses in detail her volunteer activities at various Jewish associations, including the first Jewish Home for aged Jews. She recalls her friendship with Reva Epstein and other important Jewish women in Atlanta. She also discusses her activities in Hadassah, B'nai B'rith, the Brandeis National Women's Committee, the National Council of Jewish women and other groups. She recalls the atmosphere in Atlanta during the Leo M. Frank murder trial and lynching and the Mayfair Club fire in 1963 (she was there when the fire began),
