Rose Levenson Benamy was born in Hawkinsville, Georgia. The Levenson family was the only Jewish family in town. Her family owned a dress shop. After her mother's death, Rose ran the dress shop for her father. She attended Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and then married Sol Benamy and moved to Atlanta. The Benamys had two children: Frederick and Rita. Sol Benamy was an ardent Zionist and helped obtain arms for the Israeli army in 1948. He attended the First World Zionist Congress in Jerusalem in 1951.
