Rebecca Kresses Birnbrey was born in North Birmingham, Alabama. Her father, Hyman Isaac Kresses, was born in Kobrin, Poland, from which he immigrated to Cuba, where he met his wife, Emma Cohen. Rebecca's family was Orthodox, but she attended a Baptist bible school because they lived in a small town in Alabama. Later, when her family moved to Birmingham, she attended Hebrew school. After college she worked in a family store, then took a job as society editor of the Ensley, Alabama paper. Later she assumed the job of editor of a newspaper in Terrence City, Alabama, where she encountered the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan and antisemitism. She also met and married her husband, Henry Birnbrey. After her marriage she worked in her husband's office. Henry Birnbrey was a German-Jewish refugee, who was brought to America as a child by the National Council of Jewish Women. She and her husband attended Ahavath Achim Congregation, then helped form a conservative synagogue that lasted for two years. Her four children attended the Hebrew Academy.
