Adalbert Freedman was born in 1902 in Strasbourg, France. He was raised in Vienna, Austria and eventually emigrated to the United States after World War I. He married Miriam Kaufman and had one daughter. A lawyer by education, he became a Zionist organizer in the South from 1940 to 1951. As a Zionist, he was involved with the American Jewish Conference and was affiliated with many other prominent Zionists and Zionist organizations in America including various Zionist youth organizations in the Southeast. In 1943, he challenged the anti-Zionist position of Rabbi Marx of the Temple in a letter supporting Zionism, raising a storm of controversy.
