Freedman Miriam OHC.JPG

Miriam Kaufman Freedman was born in Columbus, Georgia. Her family has been in the southern United States since the 1850s and her grandfather served in the Confederate Army. She worked in the insurance and loan business from an early age, but when she married her husband, Adalbert Freedman, (during the Depression) she was fired. She eventually returned to work and became the chairman of Merchants Mutual Credit Union. She is active in the Jewish community including Hadassah, the Temple Sisterhood, and the National Council of Jewish Women. She discusses her role in her husband's work in the Zionist movement in the southeast and Atlanta.
