Manuela Mendels Bornstein is a Holocaust suvivor from France. The collection consists primarily of letters (in German) written from Sophie Hess (1877 - 1941) to her younger brother, Erwin, who had immigrated to Brazil and later New York regarding her life in Nazi Germany. In addition there is one letter written from Sophie Hess to her daughter Ellen Hess Mendels in which she tells her daughter of her plan to commit suicide before she can be taken by the Nazis. Arranged in chronological order.
