Louis Merz enlisted in the West Point Guards, Company D. 4th Regiment, Georgia Volunteer Infantry in the Army of Northern Virginia on April 26, 1861. Merz was killed on the morning of September 17, 1862 in the bitter fighting along the Confederate left flank at the battle of Antietem. Louis Merz was the brother-in-law of Arthur Heyman, also of West Point, Georgia. The collection consists of a photocopy of the diary of Louis Merz, letters written by Louis Merz while serving the Confederacy, 1862; and a speech by Arthur Heyman. Arranged in chronological order.
