Sara Cohen Alterman was born in Atlanta to parents who had emigrated from Brest-Litovsk, Belarus (Ukraine). She recalls her childhood and Jewish religious education at Ahavath Achim Congregation. She married David Alterman and had three children who also received a Jewish religious education. Sara Alterman was active in Young Judaea, Ahavath Achim Congregation Sisterhood and League of Women Voters.
