Rebecca Mathis Gershon was born in Chattanooga but her grandparents came from Germany. On a visit to Atlanta she met and later married Harry Gershon. Rebecca Mathis Gershon was involved in the life of the Jewish community of Atlanta including the National Council of Jewish Women, the Federation, and Hadassah as well as in the civil rights movement.
