Alexander Helen Mantler OHC.JPG

Helen Eisemann Alexander was born and raised in New York City. She became an actress, using the name Helen Eastman, and performed on Broadway and in films. She came to Atlanta with her mother (who was born here) in 1947 and later married Arthur Harris. She was active in theater groups and the civil rights movement. Helen Alexander recalls experiences with Martin Luther King Jr. and the Temple bombing. She helped found a speech and hearing school for black children which became a model for the first special education program in Georgia public schools. As a real estate agent she fought antisemitism in Atlanta neighborhoods. She continues her TV and radio work. She is currently married to Cecil Alexander Jr.
