Jo Marks Heyman was born and raised in Albany, Georgia where her father was in the haberdashery business and later in the liquor business. She recounts the life of the Albany Jewish community in the 1930s and 1940s. The small Jewish community in Albany was Reform and there was little in the way of religious education except Sunday School, although they did have a synagogue and a rabbi, Rabbi Edmund Landau. She met her husband while she was attending Shorter College and after they married she moved to Rome with him. As an adult, Jo Marks Heyman was involved with the Sisterhood, Hadassah, Sunday School, and B'nai Brith in Rome as well as raising a family of three children.
